A god that
refused to die

According to Aztec mythology, the gods gathered in Teotihuacan to create the universe, offering their lives in sacrifice. All of them threw themselves into the fire, all except one. Xólotl, the dog god and twin of Quetzalcóatl, refused to die.

He fled, transforming himself into a turkey, then a maguey plant, then a corn stalk. Each time the Wind found him. With no escape left, Xólotl leapt into the lake and became an axolotl. His blood, when finally captured, set the stars in motion. The universe was complete.

The axolotl is the god that would not surrender. The creature that transforms to survive. And science confirms the legend: the axolotl can regenerate its own limbs, organs, and heart. It is the only vertebrate on earth capable of true regeneration.
